On a bright day in early June of 2011, one of the skid steers returned with three tires in need of repair. If the debris field of a tornado can do that kind of damage to those thick tires, how dangerous is it to a shoe or the foot inside of it? I suppose this is the reason people were offered free tetanus shots. Many volunteers sustained injuries following slips and missteps, let alone heat fatigue. |
In a 300-page novel for middle grades through adults, there is a character whose faith is quickly, but hopefully alterably, shaken. A lifetime believer in the power of God, an active member of the church's youth group, and a helper in the children's classes at Vacation Bible School, Carly Simon seems to have it all together. In fact, the boys all say that Carly is "the whole package: body, brains, and spirit". But when the tornado crosses directly over her head and into her life, Carly starts by questioning God. All she knows is that her beloved boyfriend, Boyd, is missing, and she desperately wants to find him. On top of that, her best friend, Madison, has lost both of her parents. Why is it, then, that Maddie (not a church goer) is handling the situation better, and with a more positive spirit, than Carly? How is it that Maddie finds faith when Carly loses hers? And what part does an 11-year-old girl have to play in tying things together for both of them? This story unravels in Out of the Wind, a story about the 2011 Joplin tornado, told from five points of view.
