The Joplin Schools mascot is the Eagle. As an elementary teacher in the school system and a citizen of the United States, I have always been doubly proud of our mascot. It's not a stretch to say that the American flag can elicit multiple feelings, as well. The flag, while something to which many people salute, also represents the survivor spirit. Whether the survivor has been in some international battle, in a terrorist bombing, or in a natural disaster (like an earthquake or the EF5 tornado that struck Joplin), s/he is able to look at the stars and stripes for hope and balance. |
