A few weeks after the 2011 Joplin tornado, I took some relief donors on a tour around town. By this time, things had calmed from the initial shock and rush to find survivors. When we arrived at St. John's Hospital, we could easily see light through the building. A friend of mine was in the hospital when the tornado struck; he was evacuated to a hospital in another town, an hour away. Five patients and one visitor perished in the hospital. The building, since demolished, has been replaced by a new elementary school, opening for the first time on January 6, 2014. |
