It reminds one of the Star Spangled Banner - that line about the rockets and bombs giving proof to the fact "that our flag was still there". The flagpole at Joplin High School, following the May 2011 EF5 tornado, stood tall, and its banner - albeit injured - still flew! This was one of several flags people proudly continued to display after the storm. Some were new - pristine - but others demonstrated, shall we say, character. The banners were frayed, torn, and punctured. They were anchored to trees, fences, poles, and whatever else might have been left protruding from the debris.
