The old sign, removed by the 2011 Joplin tornado, was replaced with this shiny new one, nearly three months later. The message on the old sign said, "When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail," an favorite saying from a teacher friend of mine. Needless to say, we had to order some new letters - namely P's. Of the blue sign, I found two pieces in the area. Visible on the pieces are the letters U and I. In other words, everything else may be lost, but "U" and "I" are still here. In Out of the Wind, the sign was one of the first things the Kelly family noticed when approaching the church building in the hours following the storm. Ten-year-old Hailey, an aspiring meteorologist, initially thinks the tornado was an EF1. She quickly adjusts her estimate upward when walking underneath the railroad bridge to see the damage to the north of the church building. There is no doubt in her young mind that this was an EF5.
