In this part of the country, it is generally acceptable for one to say a prayer for others who are suffering. One can even state on a billboard that s/he is praying. In the period of time following the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995, many business signs were changed to express this sentiment. There is certainly an element of prayer in Crumbling Spirit. It is a time in Julia's life when she prays in very simple terms for her mother and brother, but it is also a time when she learns to think more broadly and pray for the doctors and rescuers. She begins to think about the other survivors and their families. She's growing spiritually and losing innocence in the process. |
