Writing with a Poet's Pen (Writing Process)
A good writer may have to work hard to put cadence into a passage, emotion into a chapter, and an interwoven plot into a novel. Some aspects of this come natural to some authors, but I doubt anyone is a master of all that can possibly go into writing.
I can tell you that I try to add rhythm to my writing by writing in threes. When you look at my books, articles, and speeches, you will find that I often use a series of three, separated by commas. In fact, I've done it twice already in the words you are reading.
I also attempt to color the details through the use of figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, etc.) and well-selected adjectives and adverbs. Those are all things that I learned about in school, and though they tend to come out in my writing process, I also find myself having to think of a specific word to fit a specific purpose. You may think learning the parts of speech is not important, but to a writer that is just not true.
There is more, of course, to writing that simply providing the dialog and describing the setting. That's where I believe the poet's pen is handy in the prose writer's tool belt.
