When the young ladies of Out of the Wind meet Clive, they are fascinated with his frank, personal account of the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima in World War 2. They ask, and he tells them that Joplin looks exactly like those A-bombed cities. Clive is based on a real gentleman who came (accompanied by his daughter) to the church for assistance following the 2011 Joplin tornado. In Out of the Wind, the fictional Clive's fictional daughter gives the girl a word that helps Carly cope with her ordeal. When you get to that section of the book, you will learn that word. |
