While walls are being erected outside my classroom at Cecil Floyd Elementary in Joplin, Missouri, workers left a plethora of tools on our stoop. It has been interesting for students to watch the construction techniques of this major project. When completed, this will be a gym, including restrooms, a scoreboard, retractable bleachers, a concession stand, and storage, not to mention the whole thing is a safe room for the community during severe storms. After experiencing the EF5 tornado, almost three years ago, Joplin Schools, in combination with FEMA, have been hard at work to build the safe rooms at many school locations. |
