The church's library roof was in the parking lot, part of it wedged underneath the tire of a car. The ceiling of the library, sans support, fell onto the conference table in the center of the room. And the books, left upright on their shelves, were exposed to the rain. An EF5 tornado had swept through Joplin, Missouri, and the church building was on the fringe of the damage area. Now came the question: what was the extent of the damage from the 2011 tornado and rain? Thankfully, there was just enough damage to allow for a full relief center for tornado survivors and volunteers. The books, on the other hand, were virtually a total loss. The story that results is one of spirit and hope, and it is told in my book, Out of the Wind, available at local bookstores and on Amazon. | |
