Weeks into the season, the moon could finally be seen through a small opening at the top of the cave. The snow had been melting for days, dripping into the cave entrance and creating a stream. Everything in the cave was moist and steamy from the humidity...
For days now, tree limbs had broken from their trunks and crashed into the forest floor. Aaron felt as if armies were shooting rockets and cannons at one another right outside his front porch. He imagined movies he had seen about the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. The battles were fought right outside of people’s homesteads. Right on their front lawns, and often the wounded and dying would be hospitalized inside the house itself.
