Some folks in the Midwest - and elsewhere in the country - are getting "cabin fever" from being pent up for so long on "snow days". Kids are home from school. Parents have to stay home or risk sliding on icy roads. Churches cancel their activities. I have seen and heard many complaints about the long, unbearable winter, to which I must respond, "It's winter, people!" Hunker down, enjoy the time with your family, digest a few more fatty foods. This is a beautiful time of the year. Take some pictures of the scenery. Sled a hill. Shovel a driveway for someone who could use the help. And count your blessings that you have a warm place to escape from the harsh temperatures. Imagine poor Aaron, from my novel Mumsket. Not only does he have an extended winter without the things we take for granted, but he also has to adapt to a snowy situation and an odd companion. Eventually, he got the hang of things and understood life's hardships are only harsh because we allow them to be. He entered the wilderness a boy, but emerged a completely changed man. |
