The ring in this photograph is located in Cunningham Park. The ring is meant to appear like one of those rubber wrist bands (like the yellow "Livestrong" bands popularized by Lance Armstrong). Rubber wrist bands such as these, with a variety of supportive messages, were donated, distributed, and worn by many residents, survivors, and volunteers following the 2011 Joplin tornado. Behind the exhibit, there is still new construction in the works for Cunningham Park. Out of the Wind made the Turner Report, in a list of books about the 2011 Joplin tornado as ranked by Amazon. According to the report, Out of the Wind is the number 15 book. With better marketing and publicity, Out of the Wind may rise. You can help that happen by recommending the book to your friends. The empty chairs at the Oklahoma City National Memorial mark each life lost in the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Each represents an empty chair at the family table. With the 19th anniversary of the terrorist bombing, tomorrow, my mind goes back to the experiences I had teaching second graders at Buchanan Elementary School. A fictionalized version of my account took the form of my first novel, Crumbling Spirit.
The smoke still lingers in the sky,
The shock still penetrates souls, The hatred still makes us cry, Our hearts are still full of holes. Read my account of the story, as told by 10-year-old Julia Kinser, in Crumbling Spirit, available on Kindle and from Amazon. |
